Off Grid

Morning Rain

It rained at Tiny House Ontario for a good portion of the night and right into the morning.  It was welcome.  We needed it and my garden is happy now.

When I got up this morning at about 7:00 am it was still raining and the cloth porch was drenched.  The cloth hangs onto the water and it becomes opaque.  I thought you might like to see what it looks like in a photo.  I had to edit it because the image turned out to be totally dark.  The truth is somewhere between, it is not dark but it is far more grey in there when it rains then it looks in the photo.  The second photo which is unedited as the cloth porch dries is more realistic.

Happy 1st Birthday

Tiny House Ontario is one year old.  She is still Tiny!  😀

Happy Birthday.  Your gift this year is some new siding.  Soon you will have it to wear.

Tiny Open House

Tiny House Ontario had a few friends over the other night.  I took some photos of my friends, some are more camera shy than others and some are more photogenic than others.  Please note that I am not in the photos… LOL!  The line has to be drawn somewhere!

There were 12 people at the get together but it was a little bit staggered  – 6 people were no-shows, but it is PRIDE weekend in Kingston and I know that a few people got busy with this event, and another just plain forgot the date and showed up a day late with his guitar.  With the number of people we had, it did not feel crowded to me, but of course I live in a Tiny House, and I am not sure how my guests felt about it.

It was wonderful to have children there!  The dogs also settled in and were happy to have company to pet them and also to give them junk food.

Forest Food

After a few days away, I arrived at about midnight back at Tiny House Ontario.  The thing that I was most curious about is my little garden in the forest clearing.  Was it actually growing and not being eaten by the forest creatures while it sat there unattended to?  I took the LED flashlight that my Aunt Marion and Uncle Mac gifted me and went out to have a look.  I could see that there was green and that the green seemed to be in rows, but could not tell for sure if there was anything really coming up that well, what had taken root, and if the plants seemed healthy.

This morning I got out of bed and practically ran out to see what the garden was up to.

I am pleasantly surprised!  I have a few weeds to yank up, and I have to put up stakes for the pole beans but so far it looks like I might be able to do that 0 mile diet this summer!  Woot!

Clean & Tiny

Doing laundry off grid when there is no nearby river or lake is something that has to be planned because all water has to be caught or brought.  I have a few techniques for dealing with this.

I do a little bit of wash on the old glass scrub board if, for example, there is something that might stain. Otherwise I put it in my Chicken Little backpack and drive to town to throw it in the wash at Lavergne’s on Montreal Street in Kingston.  I only want to do one load at a time because I bring it back to dry and have only so much fence to hang it on.  In wanting to allow only let one load get dirty, I have to decide what to wear by the week.   What I mean, is if I choose to wear red then I stick to red/pink/yellow all week, like wise, blue/purple/green and black/grey/brown… in order to keep my clothing from being dull and yucky from mixing them all in together in a load.  In other words, my laundry dictates my weekly wardrobe.  When it is time to wash the bedding, I remove my spare helmet put this under Baby’s seat, I don’t like to do this because one never knows if they will need to take an extra rider, but I also don’t want to have to take two trips to the city.   It makes it a bit squishy with two loads, because I only have so much fence to dry things on.  Maybe I will put in a clothes line?

To save money, I bring my soap with me and when the wash is done, I bring it home and hang it out to dry.  I like to be back with it by noon so that it can dry in the afternoon sun.
