Empty Tummies and Arrogant Politicians

It is not the aim of this blog to try and talk the world into becoming vegan, or even vegetarian but rather the goal is to discuss the object of living with less.  Since I started this blog on November 30, 2011 I have discussed a plethora of topics around being a woman/writer/artist who lives part time in a project called Tiny House Ontario and how this huge, but Tiny project is going and is effecting me.

But there is something going on here in Canada and the United States that is too huge to ignore and has me really worried.  Right now we in Ontario and a whole lot of the USA are living through an historic and dreadfully bad drought.  The Canadian government has been nearly silent on the issue but recently I read an article out of the United States which explains briefly the reasoning behind the USDA’s sensible recommendation that citizens give up eating meat on Mondays.  It carries some mind boggling statistics and information in it.  Even so, the article does not go far enough (in my opinion).  The most significant missed topic in the article is that  it does not discuss what the USDA and farmers already know.  Here it is!  Livestock are being and will continue to be “dumped” because farmers cannot afford to feed them.  This means (for those of you who did not come up on farms) that they sell mostly ALL of their animals as livestock for slaughter.  This might seem like good news if you are a meat eater (initially) but here is where you are wrong, this means that there will be a lack of breeding stock next year.  You will start to see huge price jumps at about Christmas for the cost of meat and the price will keep on raising.  Truth is, it will take a few years for the animals and the farmers to catch up.

The hostile and arrogant reaction of the politicians quoted in this article is totally off the mark*.  They flaunt their stupidity on the subject of meat.  Not just on how it is produced but the time of production as well as the costs of production are not noted at all.  These clowns absurdly suggest what they will do, which is to “eat more, put pounds of meat on display and call the USDA heretics”.   What they are saying in essence is we are going to eat it all up until it is gone and leave nothing for you.  It is greed and ignorance at best!

The sad fact is, I am commenting on this subject because a lot more people will go to bed hungry this winter in both the USA and Canada and for the next year or two as well, if there are not GREAT growing years coming our way.  I wish it was not going to be this way, but it is.  Quite simply, we have not had nearly enough rain.  Below is an image from NASA Earth Observatory.  There is more info from them here.

What I am asking, is to buy some food from your most local farmer and please eat less meat for the next couple of years.  I know it sounds cliche, but if we all do a little bit there will be a little bit left over for the poorest among us.

I can’t tell you how much that I hope I am wrong.

*I want to qualify that I am not partisan or even particularly interested in who is who.   These folks are way too far from me to make me even remotely interested in finding out anything about the particulars of the political affiliation.

UNWELCOMED ADVERTISING!

When I set up this blog which is about stepping off the consumption line I very specifically chose to not have any advertising on this site.

Further, anyone who reads my posts knows that I do not use ANY commercial products for cleaning myself or my home beyond baking soda, organic apple cider vinegar for myself and white vinegar for my home.  I also use only olive oil to moisturize my skin and my hair.  I would never endorse anything that I do not use or that I am not 100% happy with.  Simple as that!

Still, this stuff which I personally consider to be total crap, and which I am more than likely allergic to, is on my blog.  This is here without my permission!  I do not make any advertising revenue on this Vaseline ad, nor any other ad which is being put without my permission here.  I do not endorse this, nor any other product. While I understand that with the number of readers Tiny House Ontario has, that advertisers might want to get in here, certainly I would not allow any products that I personally would never use, be a part of what I would allow here.  I am not opposed to advertising, for example, I would be happy to allow for example Bison Pumps or certain other off grid suppliers for things that people actually NEED, on my site, but Vaseline blah, blah, blah!  Seriously?  This sort of advertising is NOT in keeping with the ideology here at all!  I promise that if I ever do allow advertising that it will be only for products that I have used, like and or aspire to have at THO.

I want to extend an apology to my readers who have been subjected to this consumer nonsense and I also want to know if any bloggers out there know what to do about this?  For example, can I find a paid and applicable sponsor which will wipe out all this, or can I just make adjustments to my WordPress blog which will allow this to stop.  For example, if I pay for the blog space will the ads stop?

Thanks!  Image by Colleen who both captured this on her screen as well as brought it to my attention.

Rain Dance Required!

At Tiny House Ontario my morning ritual is to look out the window to see how the forest survived the night.  There are changes every single day even if it is simply wildlife that is moving around.  Currently, the forest is gasping for a drink.  The tops of the maples have started turning yellow in response to the current drought conditions.  It took 100 litres to give the garden a drink and I suppose that the forest would need about a million litres for it to help them through until the next rain.  That is a hundred of those water trucks full and then there would be the issue of getting it spread around.

The ancestor tree next to the cloth porch is the only tree that seems to be OK but of course, I always give it my bath water, dish water, left over tea and coffee including the grounds and leaves as well as melted ice water from my cooler.  Lucky tree.

Today, when the forecast called for rain I think I even saw Dictator chipmunk doing a little dance.  Sadly, the rain turned out to be less than a mm.  The good thing is that it did cool off the air a bit, so there is something to be grateful for.

There is hope! I just looked up the weather on my computer and found that the forecast calls for possible storms tonight and there is rain on the forecast for the next couple of days too.  I hope that we will have a few days of slow steady rain.  I am sure that the farmers would agree!  I can’t wait to tell the chipmunk!

Tiny House Art Gallery

I just got my art work back from a show in Kingston when the men were coming to put up the steel.  There was a whole box of them, plus I had more here that I had stacked on a shelf.  Because there is not a lot of space at Tiny House Ontario, I decided to put my work up on the walls.  So, Tiny House Ontario is doubling as a Teeny-Tiny-Gallery.

I also have a new and wonderful painting from the Kingston artist Geoff Smith.  I have not shown it to you yet, because I have not yet decided on a frame.  None-the-less, if you come to see my paintings at Tiny House, I will give you a sneak peek of Geoff’s beautiful work.

I found it inspiring to have a home gallery.  So much so, that despite my having men there putting up steel, that I started a new painting which is sort of abstract.

Here is a sneak peek of my current piece.
