Did You Hear Me Squeal From There?

OK… you already know that I am irrationally afraid of giant spiders.  It is embarrassing how many things I am afraid of because I am from a farm and should be desensitized.  I also never got used to eating meat, so I guess my family did a pretty good job of NOT desensitizing me to stuff.

Now you know the truth about me.  I am a bleeding-heart sissy!

Another one of my (many) phobias is giant garden slugs.  THIS was on my compost bucket when I went to pick it up.  Now you know what that noise was.  Actually, I did not really scream, but I did make the face from the Edvard Munch painting and the sky did turn colour.  OK, not really, that last part was just how I felt.  They are so slimy that I also wanted to throw up.

Really?

Yes, unfortunately.

Similar ones were all over Germany and Switzerland when I lived there, so I learned to always look before I touched and also not to step anywhere without having my eyes on the ground.  In Ontario these don’t actually exist.  They are invasive species that have been accidentally introduced from Europe.  I guess, now that they are here, I will have to keep my eyes on the ground again.

If you like this sort of thing, you can look it up.

If I was not so scared and grossed out by it, I might have murdered it.  It is an invasive species and much the same as purple loosestrife and trees of heaven they are not supposed to be here.  I just can’t do it.  Hopefully it does not carry away one of my dogs.

Bear the Tinker

“People who have no dreams, are poor”  ~ Bear the Tinker

It is two years since I met Bear the Tinker at my cousin’s organic farm.  A Tinker is an travelling tinsmith for those of you who don’t know (I did not).  The Tiny House where he lived and worked out of for many years, and still for much of the year is a Caravan which is drawn from place to place by his lovely horse and companion, Callum.

Meeting Bear stands out in my life as one of the great experiences.  It is hard to describe him, his storytelling, his music his wit and his peace.  The strength of presence of this man, and his connection to the past is something that one must experience to believe.

This is a clip from a great old TV show out of Canada.  Bear the Tinker lives near Kingston Ontario.

If you see him on the road, stop!  Ask him where he is heading next to tell stories and sharpen knifes, I am urging you, make Bear a part of your plan, even if you have to travel far to meet him.  If you must work to arrange it, or travel to be where he is, please do so, treat yourself to this experience.

Here are the links so that you may find him….

Here is a tip (just in from Bear).  If you want to meet him, he will be at the Delta Fair for 3 days, and events at Murphy’s Point Park on July 20 and August 3. Also FYI… he offers Yurt Building courses for small groups of 10-12 people. 😀

The Ant Tree & The Pending Storm

Just an image from the storm that never materialized.  A good rain.  It was welcome and needed!  The black part on the right is the roof line of Tiny House Ontario.

Tiny Steps

There are a lot of jobs to building a Tiny House.  It sounds hilarious to people who work construction when you tell them this, but just as in any large house there are steps that need to be taken in order to get the job done.  There is a lot more planning too, because one cannot easily move around and the margin for error is very tight.  I can’t tell you how many men have told me that they could build what I have in a weekend.  I invite them to prove it.

I feel very sure that if I wanted to put vinyl siding on the Tiny House, if I had a ladder that I could do this in a weekend.  I have put up siding before and it is a very fast task, but I don’t want this and have not really decided what I do want so the aluminium is just a skinny love to get me through to the point until I do decide.

Anyway, I got as high up with the flashing as I can get without a ladder, so hopefully our ladder will fit in the car and H will bring it to me from Hamilton.  The little two step one that I won is not really great for these bigger things.  Sigh…

So, we did what we could on the siding and then started to search for rocks for a flagstone patio and walkways.  We had two small spies.
