Money

George Carlin

I know that most people see George Carlin as a comedian; I think the reason he was funny is because he spoke the truth.

Empty Tummies and Arrogant Politicians

It is not the aim of this blog to try and talk the world into becoming vegan, or even vegetarian but rather the goal is to discuss the object of living with less.  Since I started this blog on November 30, 2011 I have discussed a plethora of topics around being a woman/writer/artist who lives part time in a project called Tiny House Ontario and how this huge, but Tiny project is going and is effecting me.

But there is something going on here in Canada and the United States that is too huge to ignore and has me really worried.  Right now we in Ontario and a whole lot of the USA are living through an historic and dreadfully bad drought.  The Canadian government has been nearly silent on the issue but recently I read an article out of the United States which explains briefly the reasoning behind the USDA’s sensible recommendation that citizens give up eating meat on Mondays.  It carries some mind boggling statistics and information in it.  Even so, the article does not go far enough (in my opinion).  The most significant missed topic in the article is that  it does not discuss what the USDA and farmers already know.  Here it is!  Livestock are being and will continue to be “dumped” because farmers cannot afford to feed them.  This means (for those of you who did not come up on farms) that they sell mostly ALL of their animals as livestock for slaughter.  This might seem like good news if you are a meat eater (initially) but here is where you are wrong, this means that there will be a lack of breeding stock next year.  You will start to see huge price jumps at about Christmas for the cost of meat and the price will keep on raising.  Truth is, it will take a few years for the animals and the farmers to catch up.

The hostile and arrogant reaction of the politicians quoted in this article is totally off the mark*.  They flaunt their stupidity on the subject of meat.  Not just on how it is produced but the time of production as well as the costs of production are not noted at all.  These clowns absurdly suggest what they will do, which is to “eat more, put pounds of meat on display and call the USDA heretics”.   What they are saying in essence is we are going to eat it all up until it is gone and leave nothing for you.  It is greed and ignorance at best!

The sad fact is, I am commenting on this subject because a lot more people will go to bed hungry this winter in both the USA and Canada and for the next year or two as well, if there are not GREAT growing years coming our way.  I wish it was not going to be this way, but it is.  Quite simply, we have not had nearly enough rain.  Below is an image from NASA Earth Observatory.  There is more info from them here.

What I am asking, is to buy some food from your most local farmer and please eat less meat for the next couple of years.  I know it sounds cliche, but if we all do a little bit there will be a little bit left over for the poorest among us.

I can’t tell you how much that I hope I am wrong.

*I want to qualify that I am not partisan or even particularly interested in who is who.   These folks are way too far from me to make me even remotely interested in finding out anything about the particulars of the political affiliation.

King of the Road

While sitting in my favourite cafe in Kingston (Mug and Truffle), when this brilliant old song came on the stereo.  This time, I was working on a blog post and I heard the lyrics again, in a different way, for the first time.

“two hours of pushing broom
Buys a eight by twelve four bit room
I’m a man of means by no means
King of the road”

THO is similar in size at ~8.5×11.5.  Of course, I don’t rent it, but own it… and my process is not one of necessity but choice… too unlike many Tiny Housers, I did not build mine to go on the road but I attached it to a foundation.  Even though there are clear differences, these lyrics made me think.

Last night, I had a wonderful chat with my almost cousin Jenny who is in the military.  She shared a story about winter camping with a deflating mattress.  It was no ride in the park!  She woke up with her bottom side frozen into the ground.  She spoke about lighting a small naphtha stove, with thick mittened fingers, while she was on watch.  She explained to me how an act as seemingly trivial as this become the matter of significant importance and how this outweighed whatever was going on in the world around her.  This along with other experiences she has lived make her full well understand that we humans can deal with loss of convenience quite easily.  We simply get on with the smallest details of survival, we adapt.  I am not supposing that my life at THO mirrors the hardship that soldiers face.  As a matter of fact, a while back a friend said that THO was practically palatial when compared to his hunting camp.  I have to say, as a person who has travelled and seen some pretty seedy hotels, I also realize that it is this too when compared to a two-bit room.

Still, THO does not have a lot in the way of amenities.  This required me to make many adaptations in the way that I live my life.  As this house of mine comes closer to completion, I hope that I have what it takes to make the steps to permanently adapt to this “less is more” life.

The great Townes Van Zandt wrote an ode to Janis Joplin and in this he said:

“If I thought about it long enough
I just might make some kind of move
watchful eyes are too hard on the soul”

To tell you the truth, I can’t explain how all this music and these thoughts are connected except inside me, somewhere deep and buried in my own personal set of meanings.  They are part of the process of downsizing and giving up on the extras that at one time I felt were needed in order for me to be happy.  Now, I think happiness is not a big pile of stuff, but rather it is something internal, gained by having experiences which make my life full.

Who Knows What Tomorrow Brings?

Tiny House Ontario, is always in transition.  When I go back there in the morning I think that Leo will have some things done there.  I am not 100% sure because I have not reached him.  I hope he will have the rest of the siding up as well as the eves trough, j-trim and facia.  If he was there, I have to fix the cloth porch.

If everything above is done, as far as the rest of this year goes there are a few small plans which I would like to see done.  This is to hook up the rain barrel and hook up the solar system.  We may also install a stove, but this has yet to be seen.

Left on the agenda for next years are some big jobs, such as, the well and pump install, the hickory floors cut, hand hewn and installed, the kitchen install and the stone patio with walkways.   I already know that I want to have a small clay oven on the patio but I saw a photo today which makes me believe that I may also need to have an arbour on this patio.  I would strongly prefer that the pillars be from fallen trees from my land and that the arbour have a canvas water repellant roof.

Any thing I have forgotten or should consider?

A Day Late and a Dollar Short

My husband returned very late last night form his business trip; actually, he came early this morning at about 2:30 am.  This morning we slept in until 10:00 and I still feel really pooped and irritable.  All very normal for me if my sleep schedule is interfered with.  I am a terrible candidate for shift work because just with this one weird night of sleep I feel sore and somewhat breathless.

There was also some work to do here on scanning my art work.  This can only be done from my husband’s PC… for some reason the scanner on our HP does not like my Mac.  This took us until 3:00, my husband scanned and I resized and so forth here on my own computer.

Getting stuff done often takes more time than you truly want to give it.  Particularly when it is stuff that you don’t want to do.  Did you ever notice that it takes a lot of time to do dishes and sweep the floor, but it does not take a lot of time to have a beer with your friends?

What this all boils down to is that I am staying put in Hamilton today and will leave after rush hour tomorrow for THO.  This will allow me another day to try and catch the injured feral mother cat and her babies, or at minimum feed her another time.  It also means that I can enjoy the air conditioning here before heading into the heat.  Sadly, it means that I will miss seeing Bear the Tinker at the Delta Fair… Bummer.

As for the dollar short… I am always a dollar short!  Isn’t everyone these days?

I hope you all enjoy a great day!
