Forest

Forest Light

For those readers who are photographers, you probably shutter… at my photos because of my total lack of skill in this department… and because I always blame my crappy camera.  It turns out the problems are all mine.  Apparently, my camera is not as crappy as I have been telling you!  Sorry!  I am just a terrible photographer!

Up on the narrows a few nights ago I was telling George that I cannot get good photos of the forest light because of my terrible camera.  He explained to me that my camera is a pretty decent one… Illusions shattered!   I showed him the photo I took a few weeks ago which is the only forest light photo that I have been happy with.  George, it turns out, is a man who is seemingly made of light.  He knew what to do!  He told me about the half way button on my camera which sets the light.  I have had this camera for about 6 years and had no idea!

George told me that if I point it at a slightly darker place, set the light by pushing the button half way in and then point where I want the picture to be, then click all the way in, that I should be able to capture the light better.

My current project is to experiment with this technique.

Balance

I was up around Toronto yesterday morning and I am happy to report that the vegetation in that area is looking downright lush again.  Here in the Kingston area, I think we must have had significantly  less precipitation to carry us through.  There has been rain, as a matter of fact, it is raining today.  Even so, I think this is too late, we have lost a lot of forest here and I also think that it is way too late for most farmers because the root system is dead on so much.  The balance of need was not met.

We have a few red tomatoes in the THO garden but sadly this is because they are dry rotted on the bottom.  The Zero mile diet has been 99% flop.  I know I will find that the balance here was also thrown off, it will have been an expensive year at THO when I finally do the books this fall.

I am lucky that I have more than one option still and am really pretty happy that I put in a back up garden in Hamilton and this is doing really well.  I have had a number of meals from there already and also I have frozen one huge bag of tomatoes and my potatoes and herbs look really great.  While I was there I put away some Niagara freestone peaches too.  I think I will reap a lot of food from Hamilton considering particularly that I have only about 30 square feet of space to grow in at the house.  Still, I feel terrible for my farming friends in this area whose books will be red with the loss.

Back here at THO, here is some rain on what is left of the ant tree.  I would like to put a bird bath up on that post, one with a drain, so I am hoping I can find something which fits here easily. I am in town now to post this and also to get two 2×4 boards for a small project.  I will write about what I am doing when it is accomplished.

Disorganized, lovely day, to read

I am not sure why I am so drastically disorganized this year.  Today, for example, I went to the Pagan Festival in Kingston in front of City Hall, except I was a week early.  I hope I can remember to go again next week when it is really on.  I want to see the Norse sword work.

There was nothing lost because, the day is gorgeous here in the Kingston area and it is just nice to sit around the house both in and outside with my dogs.

I had to read a draft for a fellow writer in Hamilton and this is a good place to read quietly.  I will write this post and head back because there is a book by a fellow Canadian writer, Bianca Lakoseljac, that I started last week and have not found the time until today and thus I would like to finish reading it.

What would you do if you were here today?

Tiny House Nuisance

There is one thing about living in a Tiny House that I never once considered.  Absurd as it is, it is something that drives me bonkers!  The source of this nuisance is a common house fly. It is not as trivial as it might sound because in a small space they sound significantly louder than in a large one and there are plentiful places to hide at THO.  The fly here has evaded me for two days and is as loud as a B6 bomber… Okay, I am exaggerating a lot, I admit it, but the silly thing is getting to me with all its flitting and flying and buzzing about!  Perhaps another reason that it is so loud is that there are no other sounds at THO, such as a television, radio or even white noise from a fridge.  When the windows are closed to the weather as they are today (rain Woot!) this fly and my breathing are the only sounds.

Further annoying is that it let me photograph it several times but then hid again when I set down the camera and got the fly swatter.  I am not sure how flies know that you intend to squish them to death with a fly swatter, but they seem to always hide when ever I pull one out.  Has anyone ever noticed this?  Perhaps they have some sort of ESP?

This photo also tells me that it is certainly time to dust THO.  I really hate dusting, so I am thrilled that THO is so Tiny!   I am also happy to announce the fly’s passing.  I finally found success!

The Back 50

Yesterday after the first rain I tootled out of THO and went down the back road to see what the forest looks like from the other concession road.

I think it looks surprisingly good!

This is the back 50 of the original farm, but this was subdivided a long time ago.  The ten acre parcel that belongs to us, is all forest and starts here where the corn stops.  This entire tree line is ours and it goes back about a kilometre from the edge of there.  It is a good bit of land for one TIny House!

I can’t emphasize enough, that it is nice to have had the rain!  I feel so much relief for the sake of the trees and thus my worry subsides for the time being.
