The Sadies

Thursday night (still in Hamilton with my newly handicapped thumb) I checked out “The Sadies”.  They are an indie band that has been getting a lot of press here in Canada.   Despite the press, I listed to a few if the examples of their work on YouTube and did not find anything that remarkable about them.   Still, I LOVE live music and thought I would splurge on an $18 ticket.

I gotta say, I was LUCKY!  No one will be seeing The Sadies with an $18 ticket soon.  They gave the most powerful performance I have seen since catching Jeff Healey in the early 1990’s.  They are brilliant!

I tried finding some more video of them so that I could give them another listen and I found a video which (in my opinion) does not justice (to their profound greatness).  Even so it is applicable to the tiny house movement and its anti consumer message so I thought I would share it with you.  Note the part when Blue Rodeo is speaking about this song’s ideology… but then, basically they laughingly display that money does not trickle down.  Interesting I thought…

Nothing to do with the tiny house movement but rather just a great video… Here is their Juno Award winning film of a song that will be on their new album (soon being released).  Also this is the sound and at least in part, captures them.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of video that shows the energy of this band.  Each of the four musicians personality and love of music is diverse.  If these guys are coming within a few hundred kilometres of you, run… and I mean run to get tickets!IMG_0461 IMG_0460 IMG_0459 IMG_0458

THO visits Osaka Japan

I have been invited to Osaka Japan in July of 2014 until August 2014.  I am considering taking the trip but only if I am able to see inside of some tiny houses/dwellings, photograph and run stories on them.

We understand that Japan is a country in which space is at a premium and therefore Japanese architects are significantly more familiar with how to best utilize smaller spaces; however, we do not have the opportunity to see this small architecture written about first hand by North Americans for the North American audience.

If you are in the Osaka area and you have a tiny house: or if you are an architect and you want to see your tiny work showcased please contact me here.  Likewise, if you know people in the Osaka area of Japan who you think might enjoy having their tiny home featured in one of my articles, please  pass this along and hopefully they will contact me.  I am not restricted to looking at show houses, any tiny livable space is interesting to our readers.

What a Porch!

As you all know, I love my cloth porch.  It is the room that I use the most, but it was built on the fly and it is not exactly a pretty addition.  When I added the boards last winter I purchased them with the intent of actually using them as a roof when I restructure the porch so that it actually looks as nice as it functions.

I am most interested in timber framed logs because I have easy access to this material and I have done a couple of workshops on how to build these things.  The material is of course the maples that fell in last year’s drought.  They will be good and dry by next spring.

While googling today I came across a fantastic looking but huge porch which is attached to a tiny house.  Well… it is actually not a tiny house… but a swimming pool change room at a McMansion, but it could just as easily serve as a tiny house.  I know I could live here easily!

pool house timber frame Do you think it is still a tiny house if you have a HUGE and decadent porch?  I think it would have to count in the square footage.
