My Paintings

As many of you know, I very much need a shed at Tiny House Ontario.  In order to build this, I need to raise some funds.  I decided in the winter that I would try to up my income, by bringing prints of my work to the historic Springer Market Square in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.  BUT in oder to do this I had to buy a car… a 1999 Golf… and is in the shop now getting a $400 repair done.  So much for earning.  So far, I pay rent at the market and I am not quite breaking even… but with the car repair and gas… tragic (for me)!

I was speaking about my concerns to fellow artist friend (another Laura) and she made a few suggestions.  In short, I have followed her advice.  I opened an account with Fine Art America to sell some of my pieces, originals as well as prints.

I decided to keep the prices minimal – marking them up just a dollar or two on each print and the originals are marked to pay for my materials as well as my time.  I wanted to keep the prices as low as I can so that everyone in the tiny house community can afford to support me.  Too, I think it would be cool to see my work up in other tiny houses!  I am really hoping that this will happen!

Big Day, Big Shift!

Today Tiny House Ontario reached 30,000 reads.  I have to say that I really had not expected this when I started this blog back on November 30 2011, less than 8 months ago.  I had intended to keep my interested friends up to date on what I was up to because they are all spread out and I don’t see them a lot.  Basically, I thought it would be easier than explaining what a Tiny House is, over and over again; so it was a laziness thing!

To say that I am surprised at the interest, would be a vast understatement.  Thank you all very much!  I am very flattered by the attention Tiny House Ontario has received.

Speaking of attention, tomorrow is my interview with KBOO Radio from Portland, Oregon!  Oh my!

The other big thing for me is that I am in Hamilton in order to do some work on my book.  I have printed what I have transcribed and will work on transcribing the rest.  What I mean is that draft number one of my book is ready.  I am sure that there is a lot of work to still do on it, nonetheless… it is now nearly all typed up and in a paper format waiting for its first edit by yours truly!

Back to you folks!  Should you wonder, here is where my readers are coming in from for the last quarter of a year:  I notice that I am back up in Canadian readers again, last quarter they were about par with friends to the South.

Thank you very much for reading about Tiny House Ontario!

Friends!

Andre who I re-met again on Facebook a few years ago came to visit Tiny House Ontario last night.  I have not seen him face to face for about 30 years now.  We had been planning on him coming for some time because he is a talented amateur videographer and photographer and he thinks that THO will make for some interesting shots.  Last night, his visit was to “size” it up.  ;-P  He brought his daughter Chantelle and his grandson Andrew out with him.  Andrew reminds me a lot of his beautiful Aunt Cindy, so he will be a stunning grown man in a few years.  Little Andrew played music for us on the stainless steel pot that I gave him.  I bet he is the next Tommy Lee, but perhaps not so Motley.

Just at dusk my childhood BFF Lesley treated me to a pop in and brought her husband Clarence over as well.  YEAH!  We chatted into the night on the cloth porch.  She is just as sweet today as she was as a little girl and her husband too is a smashing great guy!

I am sure I have mentioned that I LOVE to have visitors.  Particularly when they come by in the evenings.  At Tiny House Ontario, where there is no disturbance in the nature of things I can’t help but reflect.  To say that I am fortunate to have the friends that I have is not enough.  I am charmed in this way.

Blessed be, all of you.

Wishing for Lots! Really?

Today, like yesterday, is not as hot as it has been.  But my garden is looking pathetic because of the drought.  There is no water left in my rain barrel and with no car it is difficult to drag water a half kilometer from my closest neighbour.  My dream of a zero mile diet is not going well at all.  Too, my friends/family who are vegetable farmers, and just down the road, are in the same boat as me; only it is worse since this is their livelihood.  You cannot water whole entire fields even if you have a good well and a hose or two.  It is just terrible!

My turnips, rutabaga and lettuce are all dead.  The Swiss chard is barely making it and it is the same with the beets.  My tomato plants and squash varieties look strong enough (in the plant) because I give them the most water because they are the most filling and easily managed produce once they come.  Still, the tomatoes are small and rock hard looking and the squashes while they produce flowers do not produce fruit.  I wonder if the flowers are all male?

Herbs need very little water and seem to be doing fine even so, the blocks of these might sustain an adult through a day or two, thus not exactly what I hoped.

On the other hand my writing is going well.  I have found a good groove and I think that the novel is flushing out really nicely.  It is a contemporary rural story, except I have written out all the mcmansions that are, in reality, taking over the fields. Though this year it does not matter much since the fields in most places are not producing food, next year it will matter again I hope.  Largely I find the take over of agricultural land, absolutely appalling and I do not want to give the people who do this any voice at all in my creative writing.

I thought I would let you all know that I recently heard from a radio show out of the United States, KBOO, Portland Oregon.  The host contacted me and wants to interview me about what it is like to be a woman who lives in a Tiny House.  I think I am reasonably good with words… paper words that is.  Electronic words too, are comfy for me.  Even so, I am not a person who likes or enjoys public speaking.  Strange thing is that this is always surprising to my friends who find me outgoing and find the fact that I talk to EVERYONE I meet to be (sort of) annoying and time consuming.  The truth of the matter is that I am actually a nervous talker who is a secret invert.  I feel awkward and judged in social situations and in more public situations I am pretty much convinced that a huge sign pops out of my forehead when I speak which says, STUPID PERSON – ALL SAID BY HER IS INVALID.  This is crippling.

Last night I finally spoke to my girlfriend Liisa about not really being comfortable with doing an interview.  She is astute as anything and I always respect her opinion even if I don’t always agree with her.  This time she said something like: “Laura, if you really want to pursue the creative life and be an advocate for simple living then you cannot do so without a certain amount of putting yourself out there.”  I squealed… “But I want to be a recluse”.  Still I know that she is right.

I will do my best to contact the host today via email and see if we can arrange an (EEEEGADS) interview… perhaps from Liisa’s phone since my Telus cell phone is totally not reliable in the forest (are any of them???).

Please send me any good vibes regarding not making a fool of myself, and also not feeling like a fool.  Both are equally important.  Confidence is so hard to come by… particularly for recluses who live in the middle of the forest!

If you have time too, please do a rain dance!   My poor little garden is so darn thirsty!

My Self Shelf

Space is an issue at Tiny House Ontario.   I have read a lot of words from other Tiny Housers and they all have different strategies but for the most part containing yourself within a Tiny House takes some thought.  I am fortunate because I have a lot of time to transition because I own another home in another city but even so, living in and containing myself within Tiny House Ontario is my objective.

My strategy was to bring the things that I knew I would NEED and also to bring the things that I feel that my life would not be complete without.  Margaret Lawrence wrote in her book, The Diviners, something to the effect that she need not have kept it because her head was sturdy enough containment and I suppose she is right.  Even so, there are things that simply ground me and I guess they feel spiritually important to my person.  I have two shelves with just such items on it.  This contains:

A large photo of my family on Violet (grandma’s) side.

An oil burner from my trip to the Czech republic which is made by burning it under the earth in the old way.

The Black Maria pewter icon from Germany.

A Pope Joan tile from my friend Ginny.

A 75 year old mutant sheep foot.

A graduation gift from my friend Aaron it is the Queen’s shield on pewter.

Photos of my late dogs.

A Chutski from Professor Kobayashi who was one of my mentors.

Altar items such as my grounding stones, essential oils, a burning shell, tarot and medicine wheel cards, ritual oil burner.

A Tiny glass globe which makes me hope that everything in the world will become clear.

A sign I made from a slice of a tree that was removed for my driveway which says: Treating yourself like a precious object will make you strong. ~Julia Cameron

A yogi from Bali.

An inlayed box from BC made my the Haidas.

A few things that my son made for me when he was wee, as well as a soapstone carving he did when he was about 20.

Rosie the Riveter on a little black box.

A penny jar that says hopes and dreams – I put found change into this because I read once many years ago that found change has a spiritual significance, if you pick it up – it brings good things to you whereas if you ignore it, then you are throwing away your opportunity at good karma.

A photo of Violet and Bob taken near the end of the Great Depression when things were just starting to look up for them and others.

The Artist’s Way work.

Books that I am writing.

If you had only about 2 square feet to contain your favourite things, could you do it?

Tiny House Art Gallery

I just got my art work back from a show in Kingston when the men were coming to put up the steel.  There was a whole box of them, plus I had more here that I had stacked on a shelf.  Because there is not a lot of space at Tiny House Ontario, I decided to put my work up on the walls.  So, Tiny House Ontario is doubling as a Teeny-Tiny-Gallery.

I also have a new and wonderful painting from the Kingston artist Geoff Smith.  I have not shown it to you yet, because I have not yet decided on a frame.  None-the-less, if you come to see my paintings at Tiny House, I will give you a sneak peek of Geoff’s beautiful work.

I found it inspiring to have a home gallery.  So much so, that despite my having men there putting up steel, that I started a new painting which is sort of abstract.

Here is a sneak peek of my current piece.

Alphasmart

I finally ordered a Neo 2 Alphasmart to use for my writing.  I have a number of writer friends who own, and LOVE them.  They are basically just word-processing computers that work on batteries that seemingly last forever.  I have already used it for my writing and have found that it is fantastic because it has the ease of use of a computer without the weight and also without any distraction.  One of my friends did two NANOWRIMO years with his and did not have to change the batteries.  This was the clincher for me.

When I ordered it the person in Vancouver said that it would be a week getting here but it was significantly faster than that.  I picked it up from my Aunt’s house in town yesterday, because Tiny House Ontario does not really have an address and when I ordered my eyeglass prescription last year, they delivered it to my neighbour –  who gave it to me two weeks after they arrived.  Using my Aunt’s address was a significant improvement!

Today was the first time that I had the opportunity to use my new word processor  and I am happy to say that I wrote about five pages of text that I am really happy with.  These will become a part of the novel that I am working on.  Outside of my obvious blogging, this is the first good solid writing I have done this year.

The Path

A path is only a path and there is no affront, to oneself or to others in leaving it if that is what your heart tells you to do. Look at each path closely. Try it as many times as you think necessary. Then ask yourself one question. Does this path have a heart?  If it does, the path is good, if it does not it is of no use.
